Responsibility (a guest post)

Today, I'm actually just sharing from a note that my sister sent me. Here is what she said:

"Responsibility"-a word that seems to be missing from today's society. A generation or two ago every man (good or bad) provided for his family and every woman raised the children, kept house, and cooked for her family. There were no other options. Each did their job. Some with sour faces. Some out of joy and love. But all took their responsibility in the grand scheme of things.
But somehow in the modern world responsibility is being shirked. Men and women want equal rights they say, but, in reality, important responsibilities are falling between the cracks. No one fixes dinner. No one watches the kids. No one helps their neighbor, the poor and needy.
Suddenly no one believes they are responsible unless their "mean" boss tells them to do it....
If a person does evil, the fault is blamed on their "mean" parents or poor surroundings.

What happened to the beautiful simplicity of responsibility?

Each moment, I have the choice to decide to love my family or not. To serve them or not. To get up or not. To be clean and presentable or dirty and in my pj's all day. To wash the dishes or leave them. To cook for my family or leave them hungry....

To do or not to do. Basic responsibility answers that question in a heartbeat.

Mrs. Responsible has already been to the grocery store and has food and a plan for the whole week when Mrs. Choice is hungry and scrounging through cabinets looking for a cracker.
Mrs. Responsible looks out for her children even if it means her home is sticky with fingerprints of happily fed children, dirty from little feet running to exploration, and resounding with the peals of laughter and screams of adventure! Mrs. Choice sits in her office, while her maid cleans her well decorated house, her nanny hears her baby's first word, and her husband is forever gone on business trips.

"Choice" is sometimes the nice word for "excuses".   Other times it just means a shift in who is responsible for what. But make sure that it is only the latter and that the beautiful moments of life itself are not lost in the cracks.
