The Golden Calf

So there were so many things that struck me about the story of the Golden Calf this time so I'm just going to try and briefly list each one in this post.  Here we go... This Moshe -- we don't know what has become of him      Moses (Moshe) was gone a long time.  I was talking to Garrett (my husband) a few weeks ago about this because not many people in modern-day America would have patience to sit on a mountain for days, waiting for God to speak.  But now I'm looking at it from the people of Israel's perspective.  How many of us would have the patience to wait for Moses, while he was on the mountain for so long?       When you think about it, they've been rescued from Egypt, led across the sea on dry land, fed with manna and quails, miraculously provided with water, and marched out to this mountain.  There, they've seen God on the mountain and now they are waiting down below while God speaks with Moses.      It pr...

Priesthood -- A Dangerous Job

Image
I was reading Exodus 30:17-21.  It says:   Adonai said to Moshe,  “You are to make a basin of bronze, with a base of bronze, for washing. Place it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it.  Aharon and his sons will wash their hands and feet there  when they enter the tent of meeting — they are to wash with water, so that they won’t die. Also when they approach the altar to minister by burning an offering for Adonai ,  they are to wash their hands and feet, so that they won’t die. This is to be a perpetual law for them through all their generations.”      And I thought it was interesting that it said, "They are to wash with water, so that they won't die."      Did you know that they could have died?      Talk about  job hazards!     It's like being an electrician.  An electrician works with something that is very powerful.  There...

A Census (Exodus 30/2 Samuel 24): Every life belongs to God

Image
In 2 Samuel 24, we see the story of how David took a census of the people of Israel.  Joab (or Yo'av), the commander of his army tried to warn him against it, but David's orders as king outranked Yo'av's advice and the census was carried out.   Yo’av said to the king, “May Adonai your God add to the people a hundredfold, no matter how many there are; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king take pleasure in doing this?”      In reading that story, I thought of some reasons on why it was such a sin for David to do this census.  But the main reason that I knew of was this: it seems to me that David was counting his people for either bragging rights or to make military plans.  He was basing his ability to win on the number of soldiers in his army.      But when has God ever relied on the number of soldiers to achieve a victory?  Read through the entire Old Testament (Ta...

Responsibility (a guest post)

Image
Today, I'm actually just sharing from a note that my sister sent me. Here is what she said: "Responsibility"-a word that seems to be missing from today's society. A generation or two ago every man (good or bad) provided for his family and every woman raised the children, kept house, and cooked for her family. There were no other options. Each did their job. Some with sour faces. Some out of joy and love. But all took their responsibility in the grand scheme of things. But somehow in the modern world responsibility is being shirked. Men and women want equal rights they say, but, in reality, important responsibilities are falling between the cracks. No one fixes dinner. No one watches the kids. No one helps their neighbor, the poor and needy. Suddenly no one believes they are responsible unless their "mean" boss tells them to do it.... If a person does evil, the fault is blamed on their "mean" parents or poor surroundings. What happened to ...
